  • Gaspar Prez de Villagr (1555 - 1620) was a captain in Juan de Oates expedition that first colonized New Mexico in 1598. In that role, Villagr served as the unofficial chronicler of the expedition. He composed the epic poem of New Mexico history, Historia de la Nueva Mxico (1610), regarded as the first epic poem of European origin generated in the present United States. In this engaging study Genaro Padilla enters into Villagrs epic poem of the Oate expedition to reveal that the soldier was no mere chronicler but that his writing offers a subtle critique of the empire whose expansion he seems to be celebrating.

  • Drawing upon extensive archival research and a wide range of secondary sources, The British Zion traces congregationalist missionaries' involvement in domestic and colonial politics in early nineteenth-century Britain. As Michael A. Rutz ably demonstrates, evangelical nonconformists actively campaigned from both the Empire's metropolitan centers and its periphery to extend religious liberty and civil equality in Britain, open colonial territories to evangelization, abolish slavery, and secure civil rights for indigenous peoples. Moving beyond the dichotomizing pictures of evangelical missionaries as either the advance forces of colonial domination or innocuous humanitarians and educators, Rutz carefully examines the humanitarian and theological impulses of the missionary movement while critically examining its political, social, and cultural impact within the larger development of the British Empire.

A Passion for Facts: Social Surveys and the Construction of Chinese...

  • In this path-breaking book, Tong Lam examines the emergence of the "culture of fact" in modern China, showing how elites and intellectuals sought to transform the dynastic empire into a nation-state, thereby ensuring its survival. Lam argues that an epistemological break away from traditional modes of understanding the observable world began around the turn of the twentieth century. Tracing the Neo-Confucian school of evidentiary research and the modern departure from it, Lam shows how, through the rise of the social survey, "the fact" became a basic conceptual medium and source of truth. In focusing on China's social survey movement, "A Passion for Facts" analyzes how information generated by a range of research practices--census, sociological investigation, and ethnography--was mobilized by competing political factions to imagine, manage, and remake the nation.

Xinjiang and China's Rise in Central Asia - A History/ROUTLEDGE/Mic...

  • The recent conflict between indigenous Uighurs and Han Chinese demonstrates that Xinjiang is a major troublespot for China, with Uighur demands for increased autonomy, but where the Chinese are keen to integrate the province more firmly within China. This book traces the development of Xinjiang from the collapse of the Qing empire in the early twentieth century to the present. It outlines the Chinese policy of integration, showing how the Chinese have pursued this through economic development and in-migration of Han Chinese, and how the policy of integration is related to Chinaa (TM)s concern for security and to its pursuit of increased power and influence in Central Asia. It shows how Chinaa (TM)s concerns and policies, although pursued with vigour in recent decades, are of long-standing, and how domestic problems and policies in Xinjiang have for a long time been closely bound up with wider international relations issues.
